Rachel Lea grew up in a musical family and is a hometown girl, graduating from
Mary Carroll High School in 2001 with numerous academic and music honors.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from Central College in Pella,
Iowa. While at Central she studied
voice with Dr. Anne Petrie, jazz with Gabriel Espinosa, and choral education
with Dr. David Williams. At
Central, Rachel actively participated in A Cappella Choir, of which she was
president her senior year, Chamber Singers, Vocal Jazz Combos, Community Choir,
Symphonic Wind Ensemble, where she played the French Horn,
and held the office of Sergeant at Arms for three years in the music
honor society, Mu Gamma Pi. She was a 2004 Concerto-Aria winner, performed the
role of Mabel in Central’s 2004 production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance, and was director of the Knoxville Community
Choir for the fall/winter season of 2004. In the spring of her senior year, the music faculty nominated
Rachel to be the exchange student to the National University of Music in
Bucharest, Romania; an honor she enthusiastically accepted.
At the University, Rachel studied opera and voice with Olympia Urs, Romanian
language, music and history with Dr. Mihai Cosma and had the opportunity to
immerse herself in the music and cultures of Europe.
Rachel is also the first, and thus far, only, American to participate and
receive an award at the National Romanian Song Festival.
Rachel is passionate about music and is deeply committed to bringing the finest
of music and music education to South Texas.
Rachel currently sings in the Gulf Coast Master Chorus and the St. Luke’s
United Methodist Church Chancel Choir.
She loves all kinds of music, history and theater, enjoys bicycling, going to
the beach, reading, a good laugh, and traveling and going to concerts with her
boyfriend, Drew.
