This is one of the largest search engines. It provides access
to 13,000 news groups. It offers not only simple searches but also
more advanced, precise searches.

Excite not only uses keywords but also searches by concept. This
is useful when your search topic is difficult to describe. It covers about
11.5 million pages as well as newsgroups.

Hotbot is a very large and highly rated search engine. It is
what is known as a 'meta-search engine'; it searches other search engines.
It is relatively easy to use and allows the user to make many choices about
the type of search to perform.

Infoseek
This search engine is good for digging deeply into a subject.
It gives about 100 links per search and provides some preview text.

Librarians
Internet Index
This is a
searchable, annotated subject directory of more than 10,000 Internet resources
selected and evaluated by librarians for their usefulness to users of public
libraries. Lii.org is used by both librarians and the general public as a
reliable and efficient guide to Internet resources.

Lycos
This highly rated search engine is known for its
speed and quality of its information. Its database exceeds 8
million sites. It provides text for each site, choice of searching
only for pictures, sounds, etc., and allows you to return only the top
5% sites.

Metacrawler
This is a relative new engine. It is unique because it searches
other search engines (meta search) and cross-references them. It
tends to be a bit slow.

QUIA

Instructional Archive
Not exactly a search engine, but nevertheless with 1/2 million activities,
this is an Excellent resource for teachers.

Webcrawler
AOL manages this search engine. It is quick and easy to use and
returns 25 sites at a time. However, it doesn't give any description
of the sites its finds. Speed is the name of the game.

Yahoo!
Yahoo uses a table-of-contents approach to its organization.
It lists its top ten categories and allows you to work through its sub-directories
to find what you need. You can also search by keyword. Yahoo
offers many other links on its homepage including one to its new service,
Yahooligans.

This search engine is designed specifically for children. Topics include
Around
the World, Cultures, Politics, Homework Answers, Art Soup, Science and
Oddities, Museums, Dramas, Dance, Sports, Entertainment and
many other things appealing to children.
