Lalo Guerrero: The Original Chicano

Lalo Guerrero has inspired three generations to sing, dance, cry and love. For six decades, the "father of Chicano music" combined popular music with the Mexican-American/Chicano experience. In a variety of music styles — from bolero, rancheras, mambos, cha-cha, salsa, Tejano, comic parodies and even children's recordings — Guerrero's music and lyrics have described Mexico, the United Farm Workers movement, mojados ("the wet backs") and broken hearts from the Chicano perspective.

America at a Crossroads- "Kansas to Kandahar"

One of a series of specials commissioned by AMERICA AT A CROSSROADS, this documentary explores the response of the U.S. military in the war on terror, examining the service of army reservists as they are called for an extended tour of duty in Afghanistan. Viewers follow the experiences and emotions of a Chinook helicopter unit from suburban Kansas City in their one-year deployment, serving first in Pakistan – providing humanitarian relief following the devastating 2005 earthquake – and then in the war zone in Afghanistan. Illustrative of the personnel and logistical strains on the American military, the film’s core remains the personal insights and attitudes of these citizen soldiers as they fulfill their duties while their families strive for normality on the homefront.

June 14

The American Flag: Two Centuries of Concord & Conflict

This film is the definitive documentary about the history of the American flag. It features Revolutionary and Civil War re-enactments and new facts and insights about American flag history, revealed by the world’s leading experts on historic flags, Dr. Whitney Smith and Howard Michael Madaus, American culture expert Dr. Wayne Fields and filmmakers Norman Lear and Harold Ramis. Leading flag collectors Ben Zaricor, Kit Hinrichs and Louise Veninga display the stunning flags of their extraordinary collections that, up until now, have never been shown in public. Based on the book of the same title, this program is essential viewing for anyone interested in the rich heritage of the American flag.

June 17

Mystery! Foyles War Series IV

The popular World War II whodunit called “a triumph from start to finish” by the Wall Street Journal returns with four new episodes. Far away from the glory of the front, Inspector Christopher Foyle (Michael Kitchen, “Reckless,” “Oliver Twist”) fights his own battle against murder, mystery and betrayal on the south coast of England. The series also stars Honeysuckle Weeks as Samantha Stewart and Anthony Howell as Sgt. Milner.

Independent Lens - "La Lupe Queen of Latin Soul"

Legendary Afro-Cuban pop singer Lupe Victoria Yoli, “The Queen of Latin Soul Music,” aka La Lupe or La Yiyiyi, rose to fame in the 1960s and died in 1992 virtually unknown. Beautiful, sexual and the epitome of Afro-Cuban 60s sophistication, La Lupe remains the quintessential bad girl and perpetual outsider, renowned for emotional performances and as the embodiment of female narcissism who stopped at nothing in the name of love and passion. June 21

Wall of Separation

The “wall of separation” is a metaphor deeply embedded in the American consciousness. Most of us assume that the First Amendment prevents the mixing of politics and religion. The freedom of religion clauses have protected us from the entanglement of religion with government and secured the right to freely exercise religious faith. America is a religiously pluralistic culture guided by a secular government. But what would surprise most Americans is the discovery that this is not what the Founding Fathers of our country intended when they established the nation and wrote the Constitution and Bill of Rights. In fact, they had a radically different interpretation of the role of religion in state and federal governments. Just what was their view? Why was it different? Where did the “wall of separation” metaphor come from? And how did its meaning evolve into what we consider it today?

June 25

History Detectives - Season 5

America’s top gumshoes are back for a fifth season to prove once again that an object found in an attic or backyard might be anything but ordinary. Wesley Cowan, independent appraiser and auctioneer; Gwendolyn Wright, professor of architecture, Columbia University; Elyse Luray, independent appraiser and expert in art history; and Tukufu Zuberi, professor of sociology and the director of the Center for Africana Studies at the University of Pennsylvania leave no stone unturned as they travel around the country to explore the stories behind local folklore, prominent figures and family legends.
