KEDT’s original production, “Buccaneer Days: Pirates, Parades and Pageantry,” tells the story of this special event through rare photos and vintage film footage. Also featured: interviews with the event managers, pirate queens and city leaders who have helped the celebration thrive.
BRING IN THE TOURISTS!
That was the goal for Splash Day, a new celebration launched in 1917 for the fledgling beach-front community of Corpus Christi. Bathing beauties, a parade, fireworks and a coronation pageant contributed to the festivities.
By the late 1930’s, local tales of explorers and pirates turned a single Splash Day into several Buccaneer Days. Seafaring marauders forced the mayor to walk the plank. Events grew in size and number. Rodeos. The carnival. Sports tournaments. World-famous celebrities. The music festival. Buccaneer Days survived good times and bad. Relive the magic and see familiar faces when KEDT’s newest documentary airs Tuesday!
